Augusta native, Russell Joel Brown, has toured the globe as a singer/ actor/ dancer in various Broadway musicals. His early formal dance training began at the Augusta Ballet School under the tutelage of Zanne Beaufort Colton and legendary founder of the Augusta Ballet Company, Ron Colton. His musical training came at the hands of Mrs. Carrie Rockholt at Episcopal Day School ad Good Shepherd Episcopal Church Youth Choir, St. Mary's Episcopal Church, piano lessons with Mrs. Virginia Bush, and finally, voice lessons with Father John Fitzpatrick at Aquinas High School and Michael Joyce at St. Mary's on the Hill Catholic Church. These early influences laid the groundwork for later work with Dr. David Morrow, Dr. Uzee Brown, and the late Dr. Wendell P. Whalum in the Morehouse College Glee Club and Morehouse Quartet. In New York, Mr. Brown studied voice with the late Melvin Jordan for 12 years.

It was an early stint with the Augusta Players Youth Theater Wing that ignited Mr. Brown's passion for theater. This led to lead roles in plays and musicals at Aquinas High School. After moving to New York, roles came in the First National Tours of "Smokey Joe's Cafe", "The Scarlet Pimpernel", and Disney's "The Lion King". International work has included the Japanese tour of "Smokey Joe's Cafe", a European tour of "Ain't Misbehavin'", and engagements in Taiwan and Mexico of Disney's "The Lion King". He currently tours as a bass and Mufasa understudy in the North American production of Disney's "The Lion King".

LaShonda Reese is a dynamic singer/actress whose angelic voice and acting skills have helped her career for more than 20 years. She has recorded on Motown Records, sang background for Faith Evans, Kelly Price, Brian McKnight opened for Maya Angelou's speaking engagements, done stage plays with Stephanie Mills and Jackee Harry as well as the phenomenal Lion King on tour and on Broadway.
Quidam had its world premiere in Montreal under the Big Top in April 1996. Since then, the production has toured on five continents and been experienced by millions of people. The international cast features 52 world-class acrobats, musicians, singers and characters. Young Zoé is bored; her parents, distant and apathetic, ignore her. Her life has lost all meaning. Seeking to fill the void of her existence, she slides into an imaginary world - the world of Quidam--where she meets characters who encourage her to free her soul.
More About Michael Kaeshammer
Michael Kaeshammer has been called Canada’s triple-threat combo of piano virtuosity, vocal ability and charisma. This potent combination has earned the Toronto based artist international critical acclaim and a loyal and growing fan base. Kaeshammer's performances are pure delight and his energy knows no bounds. He has piano technique to burn and to his audience’s delight has an acrobatic way with a grand piano. When Kaeshammer performs, it’s obvious he’s having a ball, playing superlative boogie-woogie, blues, jazz, and pop cross-over material, drawn mostly from an impressive list of standards and his catalogue of studio recordings.

A reviewer of his last performance at the Tanglewood Jazz Festival noted: "drawing on a rock solid knowledge of the early piano greats, Kaeshammer does more than play the way they did. He entertains with a capital "E" the way they did… he taps into a part of music that's almost lost, connecting deeply with the audience on a gut level, so they are no longer just spectators in the music-making."

Nightly, Kaeshammer and his band have the crowd eating out of the palm of their hands and never do they leave with anything short of a standing ovation....Learn more at AugustaAmusements.com!
Nancy Wellington Bookhart

March 1 - April 30, 2013

The Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History is proud to present a solo exhibition of mixed media works by Nancy Wellington Bookhart entitled "Alterations: Fashioning a Black Identity."

Bookhart, producing artwork in her usual theme of social consciousness, forces us to face the rather dismal moments in African American history, and to observe the metamorphosis of our people and culture through the Harlem Renaissance movement. She explains:

"Our [African Americans] family album is filled with memories of these atrocities, mutilations...blasphemous humanity--haunting images. Humanity forever stained. These are not foreign to us, though history has removed the stench and horror of them, even perhaps to the point of desensitization, they still lay bare the soul--they are our heritage. Crafted out the dark and empty abyss of slavery, the unsubstantiated place of Reconstruction, and the negativity of the Antebellum, a new Negro had to be designed, constructed--outlined. A pattern, a blueprint must be created. The greatest minds were assembled to orchestrate a plan. The Harlem Renaissance emerged to deconstruct, and to reconstruct a disparate people--to fashion a new black identity."

Currently an assistant professor of art at Paine College (Augusta, Ga.), Bookhart is the director of the African American Museum Initiative. The Wilson, N.C., native received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Augusta State University in Augusta, Ga., and her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.

Admission for the exhibition and for the opening reception is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and military w/ID, and $2 for children.
About the show
Quidam had its world premiere in Montreal under the Big Top in April 1996. Since then, the production has toured on five continents and been experienced by millions of people. In December 2010, Quidam embarked on a new journey, performing the same captivating production, but now in arenas throughout North America.
More About The Artie Shaw Orchestra

On the eve of America's entry into World War II, TIME magazine reported that to the German masses the United States meant "sky-scrapers, Clark Gable, and Artie Shaw." Some 42 years after that, in December l983, Artie Shaw made a brief return to the bandstand, after thirty years away from music, not to play his world-famous clarinet but to launch his latest (and still touring) orchestra at the newly refurbished Glen Island Casino in New Rochelle, New York. Oddly enough, New Rochelle isn't all that far from New Haven, Connecticut, where Artie Shaw spent his formative years and at an early age became a compulsive reader, and where at 14 he began to play the saxophone (and several months later the clarinet), and at 15 left home to play all over America.

Shaw could scarcely have known that within a short time he would make a hit record of a song called Begin the Beguine". Shortly before that he had hired Billie Holiday as his band vocalist (the first white band leader to employ a black female singer as a full-time member of his band), and within a year after the release of Beguine, the Artie Shaw Orchestra was earning as much as $60,000 weekly-a figure that would nowadays amount to more than $600,000 a week...Learn more at AugustaAmusements.com!
